I saw a common sight today. Common, yet not so common. It was a man smoking right next to his 5 year-old daughter. Parents in China often smoke in front of their children, so that’s not what made this guy special. What made him special is that he was waiting outside a children’s hospital with . . . → Read More: Cool & Refreshing: Lung Cancer

I deleted my facebook account on Sunday. It’s now Thursday, and the info and pictures won’t actually be deleted until next next Sunday. Yep, it takes two weeks for them to delete an account. I doubt all my info and pictures will be deleted permanently. There are probably backups hidden away somewhere in an underground facility . . . → Read More: facebook Gone For Good

I used them because if I took the . . . → Read More: Motorcycle Ride on Freeway in Wrong Direction

While waiting for my friends at a metro station I decided to listen to the owner of a jewelery store in the metro who was talking to the lady that worked at the bakery in the next booth. I just wanted to see how much Cantonese I could understand, however, when I came by they became . . . → Read More: Pretending in the Metro

I walked into a 7/11 today to buy some almonds. Instead of saying the price, the cashier just pointed to the register. I thought that was rude. The least she could have done was said the price in Chinese, so I just stared at her for a moment. She kept motioning to the register, and I . . . → Read More: Just a Little Ruder Please

Yes, it’s true. I’m back in China, and I’m staying. I didn’t know this until a few days ago, however. I met with a past employer and just sort of agreed to work for him on the spot. The next day I was looking for apartments. I can’t believe it! I’m going to be living . . . → Read More: I’m back!

This man, like so many other beggars in China, is blind and plays the Erhu. I tried to take their picture at the other end of this underground crosswalk. I had a small can (similar to the one the boy is using to collect donations) that I wanted to steady my camera on for a long . . . → Read More: The Father, the Son & the Erhu

I just came across a draft that I never published. It was from when I was still living in China, right around the time the Tibetan protests were happening. I really miss China and want to go back immediately, so the irony here cracks me up!
It went something like this:March 29, 2008
So I’m still in China. . . . → Read More: I wrote this?

Today I finally realized how long I’ve been away. While paying for a bottle of orange juice with a five Yuan note, I looked at Mao’s solemn face and realized that I don’t even remember what Canadian money looks like anymore. I can’t picture the Queen or Macdonald or any of the others. Was a five . . . → Read More: Money, Blue Skies, and Shuttlecocks
