I’m in Hong Kong spending the night before heading out tomorrow by Air-o-plane. I had dinner at a nice and (relatively) cheap vegetarian restaurant. I’m not looking forward to the 24 hours of travel that await . . . → Read More: Hongsville Once Again

Trouble in The Rice Paddy
Back in August, 2009, Tom, a Chinese friend (who shall remain nameless) and I went to the beautiful province of Guizhou, China. Located to the north of Guangxi and to the west of Hunan, it’s a rugged and mountainous province and the home of almost 40 million people, including many minorities.

I edited the above picture using time I should have invested into packing for my trip to Hong Kong and China. I leave in less than 36 hours and I haven’t packed a single thing for my 7 week trip. I am unsure of what to pack. I’m going for 7 weeks, so I want to . . . → Read More: Leaving for Hong Kong

This man, like so many other beggars in China, is blind and plays the Erhu. I tried to take their picture at the other end of this underground crosswalk. I had a small can (similar to the one the boy is using to collect donations) that I wanted to steady my camera on for a long . . . → Read More: The Father, the Son & the Erhu

I made it back to Canada on Tuesday night. The flight was long, about 20 hours. I had two glasses of wine with the dinner to help with sleep, but I did not get much. The back of the seat was a little broken, so it didn’t stay in position.

I left Hong Kong successfully this time by train (the first time I missed my bus). After taking the famous Star Ferry across the harbour to the Kowloon peninsula I started searching for a metro station. In Hong Kong there are so many signs that it’s hard to see where the shop and restaurant signs end . . . → Read More: Leaving Hong Kong for Guilin and Yangshuo

Hong Kong is one of those cities that you love when you get there, but you don’t quite know why. Is it because of all the lights and interesting people? Is it Victoria? Is it all the ships in the harbour (certainly)? The covered walkways and MTR? I don’t know. It is very expensive compared to . . . → Read More: Hong Kong

I arrived in Guangzhou early this morning. I imagine this is what Hell must feel like, only not quite as hot. Luckily I still had the phone number of the hostel I had booked because I had no directions and not even a clue of where it was. The cab driver called for me and they . . . → Read More: Guangzhou

I left Xiamen and arrived in Guangzhou yesterday. Xiamen is a beautiful island on the south east coast of China. I took the ferry to see the smaller island of Gulang Yu. No cars or bikes are allowed there. Only people and carts (and recently…electric go-karts for hauling around tourists). I’ve read that after foreigners . . . → Read More: The Bus Away from Xiamen
